What is your role? Describe what you do briefly.

I’m a Lead Consultant in the Legal Operations team at SpotDraft, managing a team of two. Our team focuses on two key areas: Historical Contracts (HC) Migration and Templatization. We help clients streamline and optimize their contract management processes.

How did you venture into legal operations?

Growing up, I initially wanted to follow in my father and brother’s footsteps and become a mechanical engineer. But by high school, I realized math wasn’t for me, so I switched to commerce. When I started college, I found law interesting and decided to pursue it, though I had no clear career path in mind at the time.

Before joining SpotDraft, I worked at an outsourcing firm where I first got exposure to legal operations. In December 2021, I joined SpotDraft as an associate. The hiring process was memorable, especially getting to interview directly with Shashank, Co-founder and CEO. Even now, I appreciate the openness at SpotDraft, where I can directly discuss ideas or ask for help from leadership.

What does your role involve?

My work revolves around two main functions:

In Historical Contracts (HC) Migration, we help clients manage past contracts by reviewing and extracting key metadata. Many companies store thousands of contracts but lack a structured way to track auto-renewals, expirations, and key clauses. Our team uploads these documents into SpotDraft, abstracts the critical details, and ensures clients have easy access to the information they need.

In Templatization, we receive contract templates from clients, analyze and format them, and set them up in SpotDraft’s platform. We create custom questionnaires that allow legal teams to generate dynamic contracts efficiently. Every setup goes through rigorous testing in a QA workspace before being finalized and pushed live.

What inherent qualities help you thrive in your role?

Trust and collaboration are key. I have a strong rapport with my team and believe in two-way learning, what I’ve gained from my seniors, I now pass on to those I manage. Open communication and constructive feedback have helped me grow, and I ensure my team feels the same level of support.

Transparency is another important quality. I have always felt comfortable admitting mistakes and learning from them. The environment at SpotDraft is supportive which has helped me take ownership. Adaptability is essential in legal operations. The nature of the work requires constant problem-solving.

Is SpotDraft a high-performance environment? How do you unwind?

The energy and pace at SpotDraft are high, and it keeps me motivated. When I need to unwind, I turn to movies. I love watching films in all languages and often go to the cinema to clear my mind. If I’m home, I’ll watch something on streaming platforms to reset.

Some movies I revisit regularly include The Shawshank Redemption in English, Vada Chennai in Tamil, and Tumbbad in Hindi. I also enjoy watching football and cricket whenever I can.

Arbuvan quote

How did you plan your growth at SpotDraft?

I didn’t have a structured growth plan, it happened naturally. From my first year, I took responsibility and leadership, which was both challenging and rewarding.

One piece of advice that stuck with me came from Mohammad Moiz, VP of Customer Success at SpotDraft, during a Know Your Leader session. He said, “There will come a time when your leaders put their trust in you. You have to step up.” That’s exactly what happened for me. The autonomy and trust I was given helped me grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

What sets SpotDraft apart from other places you’ve worked?

Before SpotDraft, I worked at a Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) firm, and the difference in culture is immense. Here, recognition is based on merit, if you perform, you grow. The energy at SpotDraft is unmatched. You don’t have to go through layers of approvals to get things done. If you take initiative, your contributions are valued. One of the values that resonates with me the most is “Be 1% better every day.” Instead of competing with others, the focus is on improving yourself, and that mindset has helped shape my growth here.

What advice would you give to those starting in legal operations?

Embrace the learning curve. CLM and legal tech are still evolving industries in India, and it’s exciting to be part of something so dynamic.

Work can feel repetitive at times, but persistence is what makes the difference. Every job has moments of monotony, but staying consistent and looking for ways to improve processes will help you grow. Be open to change. Legal operations require flexibility. What works today might change tomorrow. Adaptability will help you succeed in this space.

How have you seen SpotDraft evolve? What cultural changes should we sustain?

Since joining in 2021, the company has grown tremendously in both team size and culture. Moving to the Bangalore office has been a great change. While remote work was convenient, being in the office has allowed me to collaborate more closely with cross-functional teams like support, implementation, and product.

The high-energy, collaborative culture at SpotDraft has been key to its growth. The company has done a great job in maintaining this, and I hope we continue fostering that environment as we scale.
